Three Bridges vs Aveley

Bridges started positively and had the first major opportunity when Carlos Richards sent a free-kick from the edge of the box just over the crossbar. Aveley responded with two quick chances that forced Sam Roberts into sharp saves, before the visitors eventually broke the deadlock.

Jeffrey played Toby Aromolaran through on goal after a lapse in the Bridges defence left him one-on-one with Roberts. Aromolaran kept his composure, calmly slotting the ball past the Bridges goalkeeper to put Aveley 1–0 ahead.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 38th minute when Roberts was unable to deal with the ball, presenting Aromolaran with a simple finish into an empty net and allowing the Aveley forward to complete his brace.

Roberts quickly made amends for his earlier error, producing an outstanding save shortly afterwards to deny Jeffrey following a two-on-one situation. Despite the save, Bridges went into the interval 2–0 down and were once again left with a mountain to climb.

But, in typical Bridges fashion, they responded strongly after the restart.

Just six minutes into the second half, two of Bridges’ standout performers so far this season combined to give the hosts a lifeline. Kevin Rivera set up Hayden Velvick inside the box, and the young winger produced a superb finish into the top corner to reduce the deficit to 2–1.

The goal sparked a sustained spell of pressure from Bridges, who came close to finding the equaliser. Ade Adeyinka struck the post with an effort from outside the box, while new signing Stefan Ilić repeatedly delivered dangerous crosses into the Aveley penalty area, creating further opportunities for the hosts.

Bridges were enjoying their best spell of the match, but they were unable to find the crucial second goal.

Instead, against the run of play, Aveley broke quickly on the counter-attack and were awarded a penalty in the 69th minute following a clumsy challenge inside the box. Ollie Peters stepped up and calmly converted with a perfectly placed finish to restore the visitors’ two-goal advantage at 3–1.

The penalty proved to be the turning point, with Aveley taking control of the closing stages.

In the 77th minute, Peters’ free-kick struck the crossbar, but Christopher Harris reacted quickest to the rebound and headed home to make it 4–1.

Aveley completed the scoring three minutes from time when Al-Hussaini’s effort took a huge deflection, wrong-footing Roberts and finding the back of the net to make it 5–1.

It was another tough afternoon for Jamie Crellin’s side, who remain pointless after four matches. With Bridges having faced several of the teams expected to challenge near the top of the Isthmian Premier while also dealing with a growing injury list, there is some context to their difficult opening. However, Crellin will know that his side will need to improve sooner rather than later.

For Bridges, attention now turns to a difficult Bank Holiday double-header, with an away trip to Dulwich Hamlet next Saturday followed by a home fixture against Carshalton Athletic on the following Monday.
