Bridges Comeback Falls Just Short at Eastbourne Borough
Three Bridges suffered their second consecutive 3–2 defeat in the Isthmian Premier Division on Tuesday night, as a spirited second-half comeback away at league giants Eastbourne Borough ultimately fell just short.
With the squad depleted by injuries and facing opponents with recent National League South experience, Bridges knew they would need a special performance to take something from the match. They will, however, be frustrated that a difficult first 45 minutes left them with too much to do.
The visitors had the first major opportunity of the evening in the eighth minute, and it came in remarkable fashion. Richards, Velvick and Rivera all saw efforts from inside the box blocked before Richards fired the follow-up over the crossbar.
An early setback for Bridges
Bridges were punished almost immediately. Just a minute later, a simple free-kick routine saw Corbett find Nash unmarked inside the penalty area, with his well-placed header finding the net to give the hosts the lead.
The visitors’ task became even more difficult in the 20th minute when goalkeeper White was forced off after suffering a kick to the head from Egbri. With White unable to continue, Sam Roberts was introduced for an earlier-than-expected return from injury.
Despite remaining firmly in the contest, Bridges were guilty of several lapses in concentration which handed Borough three major opportunities in the space of ten minutes. Roberts produced a superb double save to deny Egbri and Carter, while Nash narrowly missed twice as Bridges somehow kept the deficit to a single goal.
However, Borough eventually doubled their advantage in the 35th minute. Egbri, who had caused Bridges problems throughout the first half, found space on the edge of the box and his effort found the net, leaving Roberts disappointed not to have kept it out.
Bridges had a golden opportunity to get themselves back into the match just before half-time when Rivera broke through one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but his effort was saved comfortably.
Once again, the visitors were punished almost immediately. From the resulting passage of play, another corner found an unmarked Josh Rees, whose header made it 3–0 at the interval.
A completely different Bridges
The introduction of Ben Holden into midfield shortly after the restart proved to be the catalyst for a completely different Bridges performance. Winning tackles, competing for every ball and leading by example, Holden helped transform the tone of the contest as his teammates quickly followed suit.
It was therefore no surprise when Bridges gave themselves a lifeline. Charlie Bennett played Hayden Velvick beautifully through on goal, and the forward smashed his finish past the goalkeeper to reduce the deficit.
Suddenly, an unlikely comeback began to feel possible.
That belief grew even stronger in the 69th minute when Rivera, who once again delivered a dominant individual performance, robbed an Eastbourne Borough defender before unleashing a superb strike from a tight angle into the top corner to make it 3–2.
Bridges continued to push forward as Borough found themselves increasingly under pressure, clearing their lines desperately while the travelling support sensed an equaliser.
Agonisingly close
The biggest chance arrived in the 89th minute when Velvick burst through one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The forward looked set to send the travelling Bridges faithful into celebration, but a slightly heavy final touch allowed the goalkeeper to close the angle and make the block.
There was further drama in the closing stages when another Velvick effort appeared to strike a Borough hand inside the penalty area, but huge appeals for a penalty were waved away by the referee.
Despite an outstanding second-half display, Bridges were unable to find the equaliser as Eastbourne Borough held on for a 3–2 victory.
Plenty of encouragement
The result leaves Bridges still searching for their first points in the Isthmian Premier Division after two matches, although the character and second-half performance at Eastbourne will provide plenty of encouragement heading into a demanding run of fixtures.
A comeback that fell just short, but plenty for Bridges to build on.
