Bridges Undone by Controversy as Faversham Mount Stunning Comeback

Three Bridges suffered a frustrating afternoon at Jubilee Field as a 2–0 lead slipped away in a dramatic 4–2 defeat to promotion rivals Faversham Town — a match dominated as much by attacking flair as it was by torrential rain and bewildering refereeing decisions.

The Isthmian South-East leaders looked in total control early on, playing confident, incisive football despite the downpour. Their pressure paid off inside six minutes when Ade Adeyinka’s strike struck a Faversham arm in the box. The penalty award was questionable, but Charlie Bennett showed no hesitation, converting calmly for 1–0.

Bridges continued to purr and doubled their lead in the 12th minute. A crisp passing move sliced Faversham open before Noel Leighton produced an exquisite back-heel assist, leaving Bennett to provide a lethal finish and complete an outstanding early brace.

The hosts appeared set to run away with the contest, but Faversham gradually grew into the game. On 30 minutes, Eniye halved the deficit, steering home after a pinpoint Campbell cross. The momentum shift continued when the visitors were awarded a penalty six minutes later following Hayden Neathey’s challenge, but Sam Roberts produced a stunning save to deny Tashi-Jay Kwayie and preserve Bridges’ lead.

The first half had been a brilliant advert for the division — until the major turning point arrived in the 44th minute. Sam Bull flew into a perfectly timed tackle, winning the ball cleanly, only for the referee to inexplicably award a free-kick. After a long pause, he compounded the confusion with a straight red card, leaving players, staff, and supporters stunned and the contest fundamentally altered.

Faversham wasted no time capitalising. Moments after the restart, a risky attempt to play out from the back cost Bridges dearly. Roberts parried Fagg’s effort, but Dyer reacted quickest to bundle in the rebound and level the game at 2–2.

With the numerical advantage, Faversham shifted to a direct, physical approach, aided by lenient officiating that allowed them to impose themselves aerially. Their pressure told on 61 minutes when Harrison Pont rose highest from a corner to head home and turn the match on its head.

Despite the adversity, Bridges battled bravely. Reece Hallard came agonisingly close to equalising in the 74th minute, his effort skimming wide with the keeper beaten. But hopes of a comeback faded when Neathey received a second yellow in the 79th minute, reducing Bridges to nine men.

Faversham pressed home their advantage, and Ethan Smith’s 84th-minute finish sealed the turnaround and the three points for the Kent side.

Despite the defeat, Three Bridges remain top of the league with 42 points from 19 games — though the gap has tightened, with Whyteleafe (41) and Faversham (39) in hot pursuit.
