Bridges experience early teething problems in their new league

By Ellie Duffett

Early teething problems can only be expected when promotion poses new challenges and opponents in a new league. This weekend Bridges took on a back-to-back fixture with last weekend’s opponent, Leatherhead.

However, another unfortunate loss clouded Bridges’ weekend, after the team were unable to alter the 3-0 scoreline.

As the opening whistle blew, the rain came lashing down onto Leatherhead’s grounds.

5 minutes in and Leatherhead gained an early lead after a loose ball was picked up by the home side’s number 19. As soon as she gained possession, she was on the attack dribbling to the edge of the box and taking a shot. The shot was powerful landing directly in the back of the net. 1-0 to Leatherhead.

2 minutes later, star player Behr got on to the end of a progressive pass from Sandys. Behr immediately took control of the ball, maintaining possession whilst having a pressing defender on her right shoulder. As Behr approached the box, Leatherhead’s defence fell allowing Behr the space to pass to Slyfield. Slyfield took one strike at the ball, sending it directly towards the goal. However, unfortunately for the pair, the ball was caught by the goalkeeper.

Bridges continued to fight for opportunities to equalise before half-time, but unfortunately this became increasingly difficult when Leatherhead secured a second goal at 40 minutes. The goal came after a Leatherhead corner was taken, and their headed effort found the back of the net.

The team entered half-time 2-0 down.

As the second half started, Martin tried to create momentum for the side by playing progressive passes. However, the opportunities were unable to convert to shots on goal.

Almost 10 minutes into the second half and Leatherhead were awarded a penalty. Fortunately for Bridges, the ball was put wide on the right side of the post, no further advantage for Leatherhead.

Bridges could not get comfortable with the scoreline, however as at 56 minutes Leatherhead increased their lead to 3-0 after a shot was taken just outside of the box. Robinson quickly reacted to the shot, diving for the ball but was unable to block the shot. 3-0 to Leatherhead.

Bridges tried to keep a positive style of play for the remainder of the match blocking  Leatherhead’s attempt on goal corners whilst also opening up their own opportunities by playing long balls up the pitch. No further goals were conceded.

Bridges will look to gain an important three points on the table on the 13th of September against Tonbridge Angels at home on Jubilee Fields.
