Three Bridges Suffer Heavy Defeat At St Albans
Three Bridges FC’s poor run of form continued on Saturday 12th September as a trip to St Albans ended in a heavy 4-0 defeat.
In a match that was effectively a case of men versus boys, the final scoreline was an accurate reflection of a disappointing performance from Three Bridges, who struggled to compete throughout.
The hosts made the perfect start, taking the lead after just three minutes. Alex Dyer picked up possession around 20 yards from goal before unleashing a powerful strike into the top-left corner, leaving Sam Roberts with no chance.
There was little reaction from Bridges, who looked short of confidence and belief from the outset, and St Albans doubled their advantage in the 16th minute.
A cross from outside the box was allowed to find Effiong completely unmarked inside the six-yard box, and the forward had the simplest of tasks as he headed home to make it 2-0.
The remainder of the first half was played at a slower pace, with St Albans comfortable in possession and occasionally threatening from set pieces, while Bridges struggled to pose any sort of attacking threat.
The hosts went into the interval with a comfortable 2-0 advantage.
The second half continued in much the same fashion, with St Albans dominating without ever needing to move out of second gear.
It was therefore no surprise when they extended their lead in the 58th minute.
The hosts consistently won both the first and second balls across the pitch and, following a long ball forward and a flick behind the Bridges defence, Effiong found himself with a clear run on goal. He kept his composure to smash the ball past the helpless Roberts and make it 3-0.
St Albans continued to control proceedings and, with Bridges unable to find a response, added a fourth in the 78th minute.
The goal summed up an afternoon in which Three Bridges lacked concentration and commitment. A free kick was taken quickly, catching the Bridges defence completely switched off, allowing Kai Brown to race through on goal unchallenged and calmly finish to make it 4-0.
The final whistle brought an afternoon to forget for Three Bridges, with St Albans running out comfortable 4-0 winners.
The hosts will struggle to find many easier games this season, with Bridges failing to muster a single shot on target and, perhaps more worryingly, creating virtually no threat in front of goal throughout the 90 minutes.
There is little time to dwell on the result, however, with Three Bridges travelling to Whitehawk on Tuesday night for what is already becoming a hugely important fixture in the relegation battle.
With both sides battling for points at the wrong end of the table, the encounter is shaping up to be a genuine six-pointer. Bridges will be boosted by the return of captain Noel Leighton and midfield maestro Ade Adeyinka, who are both available again following their suspensions.
