Christmas Cracker as Bridges Edge Nine-Goal Thriller to Stay Top

Three Bridges produced a dramatic late twist to defeat Ashford United 5–4 in a breathless Isthmian South-East encounter at Jubilee Field, a result that sees Bridges sit top of the league at Christmas after a truly unforgettable afternoon.

The match burst into life almost immediately. Ashford had a golden chance to take the lead inside the opening minute when Louis Collins raced through one-on-one with Sam Roberts, but his finish lacked conviction and Roberts was able to escape punishment.

Bridges soon made that miss count. In the 10th minute, outstanding wing play from Hayden Velvick led to the opener, his low cross met by league top scorer Noel Leighton who finished clinically to make it 1–0.

Ashford responded well and kept the pressure on, finding a deserved equaliser in the 24th minute. Following a scramble in the box, Mike West poked the ball through Roberts’ legs to level the score at 1–1. The visitors then turned the game on its head seven minutes later when Roberts rushed from his box and was lobbed by Collins, giving Ashford a 2–1 lead.

Just as it seemed Bridges would trail at the break, they struck in dramatic fashion deep into first-half stoppage time. Josh Hallard delivered a superb cross which Leighton chested back across goal, allowing Reece Hallard to unleash a thunderous strike to restore parity and send the sides in level at 2–2.

The second half promised fireworks and duly delivered. Ashford regained the lead in the 57th minute when Samuel Hesler fired a powerful low free kick from the edge of the box into the corner. That advantage lasted just four minutes. More excellent work from Velvick ended with a pinpoint back-post cross, where Reece Hallard produced a stunning bicycle kick that gave the goalkeeper no chance — undoubtedly the goal of the afternoon.

Bridges finally moved back in front in the 77th minute as Velvick again proved the provider, his delivery met by a perfectly weighted header from Leighton for his second of the game and 19th league goal of the season.

Still, Ashford refused to fold and their persistence was rewarded in the 82nd minute when Josh Hallard was penalised for a challenge in the box. Collins stepped up and calmly converted the penalty to make it 4–4, setting up a frantic finale.

With both sides pushing, Bridges showed the desire of a title contender. In the seventh minute of stoppage time, Ade Adeyinka drove into the Ashford area, beat his man and was brought down. Under huge pressure, Charlie Bennett stepped forward and coolly dispatched the penalty in the 97th minute to secure a remarkable 5–4 victory and send Jubilee Field into raptures.

It was a thrilling contest for any neutral between two excellent sides, but once again Bridges found a way to come out on top.

The win confirms Three Bridges as mathematically top of the league heading into the new year, sitting first with 54 points from 23 matches, five clear of second-placed AFC Croydon. Bridges now travel to Hassocks on 27 December (15:00) before returning home on 3 January to face Broadbridge Heath.
