Early Strike Sinks Bridges at Sittingbourne

Three Bridges suffered their fifth defeat of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling to a narrow 1–0 loss away at Sittingbourne as their lead at the top of the Isthmian South-East Division was trimmed.

With the hosts sitting fourth and firmly in the play-off picture, Bridges always knew the trip to Woodstock Park would be a stern examination. A lively home crowd created a hostile atmosphere, still mindful of the painful memories from two years ago when Noel Leighton inspired Bridges to a play-off semi-final victory on the same ground.

The hosts made the perfect start in just the 4th minute. A cross from the left was met inside the box by Harvey Smith, whose header found the net to give Sittingbourne an early advantage. There was a feeling that Bridges goalkeeper Sam Roberts might have been able to do better as the ball slipped past him.

That early goal allowed Sittingbourne to settle into a disciplined shape, content to sit back and frustrate the league leaders. Bridges enjoyed the majority of possession throughout the first half but struggled to carve out clear opportunities, with several set-piece deliveries failing to trouble the home defence. Sittingbourne went into the break holding their 1–0 lead and looking good value for it.

The pattern of the game continued after the restart. Bridges saw plenty of the ball but found it difficult to break down a well-organised Sittingbourne side. The hosts looked the more threatening on the counter, with Mitchell May heading narrowly wide in the 53rd minute before appearing to double the lead six minutes later, only for the assistant’s flag to rule the effort out for offside.

Bridges’ best chance arrived in the 70th minute when Noel Leighton struck from the edge of the box, his effort drifting agonisingly wide of the post.

The afternoon ended on a sour note for the visitors in the 87th minute when Leighton received his second yellow card for a professional foul to halt a Sittingbourne counter attack, reducing Bridges to ten men for the closing stages.

In truth it was a match of very few clear chances, with Smith’s early header proving decisive in a game where it remained the only shot on target for either side.

Despite the setback, Bridges remain five points clear at the top of the Isthmian South-East Division and still hold a game in hand over second-placed AFC Croydon Athletic, with nine league matches remaining in the campaign.
