Bridges Beaten on the Road at Margate

Three Bridges suffered a frustrating setback in the Isthmian South-East title race on Saturday afternoon, falling to a 2–0 defeat away at Margate.

Following their midweek cup heroics, Bridges made one enforced change, with Carlos Richards replacing the suspended Noel Leighton. However, a combination of fatigue and Leighton’s absence proved telling over the course of the contest.

The first half offered little in terms of action, with Margate setting up in a deep defensive shape that proved difficult to break down. Bridges struggled to retain possession under pressure, while the hosts created a couple of half chances of their own. Neither side could find a breakthrough before the interval, and the teams went in level at 0–0.

Bridges emerged with greater intent after the restart and felt they should have had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 55th minute. Reece Hallard was brought down inside the box as he attempted to connect with a volley, but the referee waved away strong appeals for a penalty.

Moments later, Margate took advantage at the other end. A failure to clear the ball allowed the hosts to deliver a cross into a crowded penalty area. Although the initial effort from Ben Greenhalgh was blocked, the rebound fell to Young, who volleyed into the bottom corner to give Margate the lead.

Sam Roberts produced an important save in the 70th minute to deny Greenhalgh and keep Bridges in the contest. The introduction of Harvey Woollard helped shift momentum, with Bridges moving the ball more quickly and applying sustained pressure. However, clear-cut chances remained limited, with efforts largely restricted to long-range attempts.

With several stoppages and delays for injuries, there was an expectation of significant added time, but only six minutes were indicated. Bridges were unable to make their pressure count, and any late hopes were extinguished in stoppage time. A miscommunication at the back between Roberts and Hayden Neathey resulted in an unfortunate defensive error, allowing Greenhalgh to capitalise and seal the points with a simple finish.

The result leaves Bridges still top of the Isthmian South-East League table on 84 points from 36 games, five clear of nearest challengers AFC Croydon, with six matches remaining.
