Game Timeline
A much-improved Bridges performance compared to previous weeks resulted in a 2-1 win away to Hythe Town and a place in the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy.
This was a young Bridges side, with most being under the age of 23, including three current under 18 players making up the subs bench. It was however the oldest head in the squad who put us ahead, as veteran striker Elliott Romain met Hayden Velvick’s cross at the front post with a left-footed finish in the 5th minute and netted like the poacher he is well known for being.
Bridges dominated the first-half in possession, with Ferreria and Woollard protecting the defensive line, allowing the likes of Rivera, Burnett, Velvick and Bobomurodov to link up nicely and play free flowing football as Hythe struggled to deal with the Bridges shape and put very little press on the centre-back’s.
The lead was doubled in the 31st minute and Hayden Velvick was again the provider. The young loanee from Tonbridge Angels beat his man down the left flank and crossed in for Kevin Rivera to finish on the half volley.
Both Burnett and Romain forced Hythe ‘keeper Coleman into good saves in the closing exchanges of the opening 45 minutes, but Bridges had a deserved 2-0 lead at the break after a very good display thus far.
The game followed the same flow at the start of the second-half, with Bridges having the majority of the possession and Hythe putting in little effort to win the ball back. The most notable chance was Bobomurodov putting a left-footed shot just over after cutting in from the left-hand side.
However, it wouldn’t be a Bridges performance without a few nervy moments, and Hythe were finding a way back into the game into the last 15 minutes. Glover had to make a good low save to deny James’s fizzing shot before Scott put a flash shot just wide when he really should have scored.
Hythe did eventually find their goal in injury time, with striker Bruno Tavares heading in at the back post, but it was too little too late for the home side and Bridges came away from the Kent cost with a much needed (and deserved) victory.
