Five-Star Bridges March On at the Summit

Three Bridges strengthened their grip on top spot in the Isthmian South East Division with a commanding 5–1 victory over Erith Town at Jubilee Field on Saturday afternoon.

Chasing a fifth consecutive league win, Bridges entered the contest full of confidence but wary of an Erith side fighting for survival. Any early nerves were quickly settled inside four minutes when Reece Hallard delivered a superb cross into the box. Despite a defensive deflection, Charlie Bennett reacted sharply to fire home a clinical volley and hand the hosts a dream start.

Bridges controlled much of the early proceedings, though a handful of scrappy moments allowed Erith to threaten sporadically. Noel Leighton will feel he should have doubled the advantage in the 25th minute, somehow heading wide from just two yards out.

The second goal did arrive four minutes later, and in spectacular fashion. Ade Adeyinka, finding space from a tight angle, drilled a low effort that cannoned off the post and into the net to make it 2–0.

Erith responded almost immediately. After sloppy play in defence, the visitors were awarded a penalty in the 31st minute. Sam Roberts guessed correctly and got a hand to Atkins’ effort, but the placement proved too precise as Erith reduced the deficit to 2–1.

The response from Bridges was emphatic. Just six minutes later, more excellent work from Reece Hallard created the opportunity for Bennett inside the area. The striker swivelled smartly and finished confidently for his second of the afternoon and his 20th league goal of the campaign, restoring the two-goal cushion at 3–1 by half-time.

Although Bridges dominated possession after the break, clear-cut chances were initially limited. The decisive fourth goal arrived in the 65th minute following a powerful 40-yard surge from Hayden Neathey. His perfectly timed pass released Hayden Velvick behind the Erith defence, and the resulting low cross was turned into his own net by Mel Turner under pressure. At 4–1, the contest was effectively over.

The fifth and final goal came in the 80th minute when the energetic Bryan Villavicencio delivered an inviting ball into the box for Leighton, who made amends for his earlier miss by converting from close range to complete an impressive afternoon’s work.

The victory sees Bridges move onto 78 points from 32 matches, sitting 11 points clear of AFC Croydon at the summit. Impressively, the club currently boasts the league’s top three goalscorers — Reece Hallard (26), Noel Leighton (25) and Charlie Bennett (20) — underlining their attacking dominance this season.

Attention now turns to a significant away fixture at Sittingbourne on Saturday 7 March, followed by a third attempt to travel to Beckenham Town on Tuesday 10 March after previous postponements.
