Another Step Closer: Bridges See Off Hastings to Go 11 Points Clear

 Three Bridges took another significant stride towards their promotion ambitions on Tuesday night with a commanding 3–0 victory away at Hastings United, extending their lead at the summit of the Isthmian South East League to 11 points.

Facing their second away fixture in three days following Saturday’s hard-fought win at Crowborough Athletic, Bridges knew the magnitude of the task ahead. A Hastings side battling unexpectedly near the bottom of the table were desperate for points, and on a testing surface it was always likely to be a physical contest rather than a spectacle.

The opening exchanges reflected just that — long balls, second phases, and limited clear-cut chances. Bridges had to remain patient. The breakthrough arrived in the 29th minute when Hayden Velvick produced a moment of quality, gliding past two defenders before being brought down 23 yards from goal. Reece Hallard stepped up, and his free-kick — aided by a heavy deflection — wrong-footed Hastings goalkeeper Haines to give Bridges a valuable lead.

The remainder of the first half was a defensive examination. Hastings launched a series of crosses, long throws and corners into the Bridges area, but the backline stood firm. Sam Bull and Hayden Neathey were immense in the air, repelling everything that came their way as Bridges went into the interval ahead.

An improved second-half performance was demanded — and delivered.

Bridges emerged with greater control and composure, limiting the hosts to hopeful deliveries while managing the tempo more effectively. In the 53rd minute, skipper Harvey Woollard, who dictated proceedings throughout, made a superb sliding tackle to ignite a counter-attack. Reece Hallard burst through, beat Asike and saw his effort bundled home by Noel Leighton for his 24th league goal of the season, doubling the advantage.

From there, Bridges managed the contest expertly. Despite Hastings’ continued endeavour, they failed to register a single shot on target across the 90 minutes — a testament to the organisation and concentration of the visitors.

The final flourish came in the 88th minute and perfectly encapsulated the unity within the squad. Leighton broke clear and, despite sitting just two goals behind Reece Hallard in the race for the league’s Golden Boot, selflessly squared the ball to Velvick, who was brought down inside the box. Charlie Bennett stepped up and confidently converted the resulting penalty to make it 3–0 — his 18th goal of the campaign — sealing another vital away victory.

The result sees Bridges move to 75 points from 31 matches, sitting 11 points clear of second-placed AFC Croydon Athletic with 11 fixtures remaining.
