Decisive Bridges Overcome Spirited Nine-Man Margate

Three Bridges strengthened their position at the top of the Isthmian South-East league with a composed but hard-earned 3–0 victory over Margate, who finished the afternoon with nine men at Jubilee Field. Jamie Crellin’s side knew they were facing one of the league’s in-form teams, with Margate arriving unbeaten in ten and firmly in the play-off race, and the early stages reflected that as both sides contested a fiercely competitive opening spell.

Bridges created the first real openings midway through the half. In the 26th minute, a superb cross from Reece Hallard picked out Noel Leighton, whose header drifted just wide, and only a minute later Hallard himself couldn’t quite stretch far enough to convert a low ball from Ade Adeyinka. The match’s momentum shifted dramatically in the 42nd minute when Leighton broke through on goal and saw his goal-bound strike handled outside the box by Margate goalkeeper Wray, who received a straight red card. With no substitute keeper available, outfield player Ben Greenhalgh was forced to take over in goal, and matters worsened for the visitors at the break when Samuel Blackman was also dismissed following an incident in the tunnel.

Bridges made their numerical advantage count almost immediately after half-time. Just three minutes after the restart, Hayden Velvick delivered a pinpoint cross that Adeyinka steered home to open the scoring. Velvick then provided again in the 52nd minute, his delivery dummied smartly by Adeyinka to allow Hallard to sweep in the second. Despite being reduced to nine men, Margate showed impressive character and pushed forward bravely, forcing Sam Roberts into several sharp saves. Their closest moment came in the 75th minute when Harry Hudson rattled the bar with a powerful strike.

The home side finally settled the contest in the 78th minute when Leighton led a swift counter-attack and slid the ball through to Adeyinka, who finished calmly past the stand-in keeper to make it 3–0. Margate continued to threaten despite their disadvantage and forced Bull into a crucial goal-line clearance late on, but Bridges saw out the final minutes to secure a valuable clean sheet and a vital three points.

It may not have been the most fluid performance of the season, but the importance of the result cannot be overstated. With 48 points from 21 matches, Bridges sit four points clear of AFC Whyteleafe, who still hold a game in hand, as the league reaches its halfway mark. Momentum remains firmly on their side as the promotion race intensifies.
